Day 33/365

A bit of history

Today I will not me posting an image taken on this date, but instead, I'd like to share a bit of history with you.

The year was 1959. Fifty-one years ago today, on a cold February evening....

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper all appeared at he Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. This was to be the night that all three acts played their final show... before being killed in a plane crash early the following morning.

For more info about this day in history and these three legends that made history, click here.

These are a few of the images that I capture at the 'Kato Ballroom' in Jan 2009. It was 50 years earlier to the day that the three whom perished in that plane crash played at this ballroom. Above you will see Tommy Allsup, along with the Buddy Holly Tribute Artist. You'll also see Ritchie Lee, the Ritchie Valens Tribute Artist and one of my favorite photos of Tommy Allsup.

Of all the people there in Clear Lake, IA, Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup and Buddy's back up band were not on that small plane, but instead on a freezing bus, heading for the next city to play the next venue in the 'Winter Dance Party of 1959".

  2. Thanks Mark,
This was just a snap-shot...Nothing more! The day was warm, overcast sky with no breeze. I felt that if my daughter can go out and shovel snow, then I can go out and capture an image. One is all that it took to get today's shot.
